1. Introduction
The goal of our project is to decrease rates of obesity by affecting
our eating behavior implicitly by using human computer
interaction techniques. Obesity has become a serious public health
concern all over the world. It increases the risk of many medical
conditions, both physical and mental. Obesity risk can be
decreased through limiting food intake and***rcising.
To decrease rates of obesity, many researchers have developed
systems to promote physical activity [J. MAITLAND ET AL. 2011].
Conversely, there are few studies on how such techniques can be
used to modify food intake. One limitation of these methods is
that they are based on conscious education. Sustaining highly
conscious effort when performing an intended behavior can be
difficult. However, if aspects of eating behavior are controlled
subconsciously, we may be able to modify food intake with
minimal effort. Thus, our research focuses upon controlling food
intake implicitly.
Recent psychological studies have revealed the amount of food
consumed is influenced by both characteristics of the food itself
and environmental factors during eating. For example, plate size,
package size, lighting, and socializing subsequently influence how
much we serve and eat [B. WANSINK. 2004, B. J. ROLLS ET AL.
2004]. Based on this knowledge, we hypothesize this ambiguity in
perception of satiety can be applied to a method for implicit
controlling our food intake.
In this paper, we propose the “Augmented Satiety” system to
modify satiety perception implicitly and control nutritional intake
interactively according to the meal and its nutritional value by
changing the factors with interactive computer graphics
techniques, object recognition techniques and augmented reality
paradigm.
By mediating the control of contextual cues by digital technology,
we can reduce total food intake as a means to lose weight and
control the balance of nutritional value. In other words, this
technology could support decreased food intake and influence the
consumption (more consumption or less consumption) of a
specific type of food (greens, certain macronutrients, etc.). This
could help control eating behavior adequately according to the
meal and its contents.
